Celebrate the Year of the Rat

February 01, 2020

Saturday, February 1st, Hollywood celebrates the Chinese New Year. And this year, according to the Chinese Zodiac, is the year of the rat, the metal rat. Metal, because each animal also comes with an element. The Chinese Zodiac calendar marks the official start of the new year on January 25th, but the Golden Dragon Parade that spirals through Chinatown kicks-off one week later. It's a most colorful event with nearly two dozen floats, marching bands, cultural groups, dancers, music, and more. A long-standing Los Angeles tradition, the parade is in its 121st year and is revered by more than 100,000 people who, each winter, flock to Hill Street and Broadway in the city's downtown to watch the action. The parade begins at 1:00 pm and ends at 3:30. Expect colorful souvenirs to be handed out and delicious Chinese sweets to tease and tempt your curiosity. Happy New Year!
